PURINA® PROPLAN® VETERINARY DIETS Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic is a complete hypoallergenic veterinary diet for the diagnosis and management of food allergies in cats of all ages, including kittens. Some cats may suffer from food allergy, which can cause skin discomfort and/or digestive upsets. PPVD HA is a true hypoallergenic diet formulated with protein that has been broken down (hydrolysed) into very tiny components that are too small to cause an allergic reaction, and a purified carbohydrate source. Such hydrolysed diets are recognised as the best type of food to use during an 'elimination diet trial' when trying to diagnose (or rule out) food allergy. During such a trial it is important that your cat is fed no other food or treats. PPVD HA is also useful for cats with severe bowel disease such as IBD as it is highly digestible.
With St/Ox to help support urinary health in cats which may be susceptible to urinary conditions.

It's a relief to find food that my cat likes and can eat - he has developed a wheat intolerance and so are delighted to find a quality product that he can eat

Suggested by my vet but sadly my cat won't eat it.

I buy this for my cat with IBD but have another cat with no health problems. Both cats prefer this to any other dry food so it’s definitely considered tasty by cats. It hasn’t resolved my cat’s IBD symptoms despite him having this food for years but I’ve been told by the vet to keep giving it to him.

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding PRO PLAN VETERINARY DIETS HA Hypoallergenic Dry Cat Food, including answers from our team.

My cat is 13 and suffers a skin allergy that leaves him intensely itchy he sits twitching his skin and over grooms. He has been on royal canin skin and coat for 2 years along with steroids. He is now totally bored of this food, he does want to eat because he is doing his best to steal the other cats food, I am looking to try him with a new food that will not aggravate his skin allergy is this food suitable. I have read through Q&A and cant see anyone feeding because of this problem. Thanks.
Purina HA is an anallergenic diet which means it cannot set off a food allergy in your pet. Whether it will help your cat depends on whether he has a food allergy. If you have not performed a diet trial for the condition to work this out then it would be worth doing one using this food. I recommend reading our blog 'Allergies in Cats & Dogs - a Vet Guide' for a full summary on how to do this effectively.
If your cat does not have a food allergy then it will still be fine, it is a complete cat food which will meet his full nutritional requirements. You just may not see any significant difference compared to using other diets.

I have a cat aged 12 who loves dried food but she has started having 6 monthly bouts of cystitis would this food be ok for her.
This diet is intended for the control of food related intolerances/allergies. You may be better using a urinary veterinary diet instead. It is best to discuss this with your local vet as it is important you choose the correct diet for treating your specific cat.

Is it classed as a complete food?
Yes this is a complete diet and so your cat can stay on it as the only food lifelong if needed.

Good Afternoon, my 5 yr old cat has allergies since I rescued her with her ears she’s an indoor cat Speyed flea monthly and worm every 3 months. She is currently on Sheba soup and purina adult dry food. She has dreamies and dental biscuits she also gets toothpaste on her front paw every evening after her last meal to keep her teeth in tip top condition.
Can I try belle my cat on the pro plan hypoallergenic cat food dry & wet ?
This diet is specially formulated to be completely anallergenic, which means it cannot set off an allergy. It is a veterinary diet so you should run it's use past your vet though. If you feed only this diet for 6 to 8 weeks and the signs of the allergy disappear then you know it was a food allergy contributing to the problem and you can either continue it or trial a different diet, returning if signs come back.
It is important that it is the only food fed, if your cat scavenges or you continue with this feeding regime (dental biscuits, treats) then you are unlikely to see any benefit.

Our 15 year old cat loves this food but it doesn't seem to satisfy her appetite. She weighs about 3kgs but we want her to weigh more as she recently lost weight due to her hyperthyroidism (she is on Thyronom twice daily). We give her 50-52g a day but she would definitely eat more. Would allowing her to have more be ok or would it possibly make her poo more runny?
If your cat has an increased calorific requirement than the average cat then it is absolutely fine to increase the amount you give. If your cat does not have diarrhoea with the current amount given then there is no reason it should cause diarrhoea when more is given. If your cat has soft stools it is worth discussing this further with your vet, this can be due to the hyperthyroidism.

My cat has these allergies chicken/soy bean/corn/rice/oat meal/potato/peas/tomato/wheat an this food has some of them in. My vet suggested this is it safe. Confused
Purina HA contains hydrolysed protein sources. This means even if your pet is allergic to soya then it is processed in such a way that it cannot cause a reaction in your cat. All the other ingredients are also processed to ensure that even if your cat is allergic to the original ingredient they cannot react to the final product.
Your vet or Purina themselves will be able to discuss further if you are particularly concerned, I advise getting in touch with them.

Can you please give me a full list of ingredients. My cat is allergic to chicken in particular. Thank you.
The ingredients are listed in the link towards the bottom of the listing on the website. There is no chicken or any other animal protein in this food. It is a specially processed diet which has all the protein sources partially digested already. This means that there are no proteins present at all (such as those found in chicken) and so it cannot trigger an allergic response. (Even if chicken was on the ingredient list, it should not matter because the protein is "hydrolysed" and so could not cause a reaction even to a dog allergic to chicken.)
It is quite an unusual looking diet with a very pale kibble, but dose work extremely well and is a very popular and effective diet for dogs with dietary allergies, whatever their cause.
