Why Worry about fleas?
Fleas can cause more than just irritation in dogs; they can lead to flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) or even anaemia (if it’s a severe infestation). Some pets develop allergies to flea saliva, which means even a few bites can lead to severe itching and sore skin infected fleas can also transmit tapeworm if swallowed during grooming. All very nasty stuff.
What’s more, fleas don’t just bite your furry friend, they bite humans too and can infest your home causing irritation to you and your family. Did you know it can take months to get rid of a infestation in your home as only 5% of fleas lice on tour pet, the other 95% are in your home environment as eggs, larvae and pupae.
One application of advantage, the vet-recommended flea treatment, with its fuss-free pipette application gets to work within one day and remains effective for up to four weeks. Advantage is able to kill fleas through contact, no biting required. *

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Advantage 100 Spot On Flea Control Medium Dog, including answers from our team.

Is advantage safe to use on my lactating/nursing female? her pup is 3 days old so donāt want to use anything that could harm her
The datasheet for Advantage states the following regarding this:
No reproductive toxic effects have been observed in rats and no primary embryotoxic or teratogenic toxic effects have been observed during the studies on rats and rabbits. Studies on pregnant and lactating bitches, queens and does together with their offspring are limited. Evidence so far indicates that no adverse effects are to be expected in these animals.
This means early evidence appears to show it's safe however this is not enough to confirm it is safe. Therefore it is advised to avoid it during lactation unless your vet specifically states you should use it.
I recommend using a product like Frontline Plus which is confirmed as safe in lactating females.

My cairn terrier puppy is nearly 4kg is advantage ok to
Use on puppies. Thank you
If your puppy is 8 weeks or older than Advantage is safe to use. If they are not yet 4kg then you should use the Advantage for Small dogs <4kg version. Once they are 4kg or over and less than 10kg then you can move onto the Advantage for Medium dogs 4-10kg.

Hi, Iāve just been to buy some āAdvantage Spot On Flea Controlā for one of my dog.
Iāve weighed her and sheās 10.2 kg
Should I get the 4 ā 10kg Spot On
or the 10 ā 25kg ?
Thanks, (O:
If your dog is over 10kg, even if only by 0.2kg, then you will need the 10-25kg dose as per the datasheet. Underdosing and using the 4-10kg pipette can lead to lack of efficacy and so risk it not killing all fleas effectively. The product has been tested and is very safe for use in the weight ranges suggested.

Does Advantage kill fleas on contact with the dog or do they have to bite to be killed?
What tick treatment should/can be used with Advantage or would it be better to use Advantix?
Fleas do not need to bite to be killed by a spot on product like this. However it does not 100% guarantee fleas won't bite, a few may still be alive and able to do this. It is recommended to use Advantix if seeking tick coverage also as this contains the same flea killing ingredient as Advantage but in combo with a tick preventative.
If you are looking for an over the counter flea/tick repellant with the same ingredient as Advantage then I advise Seresto collars.

Hi, I use this for my dog and I believe itās effective on fleas and ticks, I started to use a different brand a while ago for some unknown idiotic reason and much to my regret. In the first few months I knew that is was barely effective on fleas. The majority of the time he is flea-less even if the cat was to have any they donāt last long enough to be seen(when Iāve used advantage). So I stopped using itch on him and back to Advantage.
Around the 3rd/4th week of no treatment between changing over my dog got a tick. (First and only tick ever, *Touches wood*) I applied Advantage, like I would before and the first few days of applying Advantage we were back to no fleas and the tick had died and soon dropped, maybe took a week and half max.
Now Iām wondering if this works for mites? Iāve used Thornit power a couple of times recently, it seems to be make him more comfortable and sleepy š. My dog has days where he will āItchā or shake his ears a fair bit, not always aggressively, sometimes he will be gently moving his head while his paw (maybe nail) is rubbing his ear, eyes closed and looks like heās enjoying it šš«š«.
Most of the time when heās itching Iāll try distract him to get him to stop then rub/massage his ear gently and have a look to see if thereās anything noticeable, ( once or twice thereās been some wax which came away using ear cleaner by Paw Origins). This seems like it keeps on top of the problem and heās more comfortable however I feel thereās no major progress. (Unless heās pulling my leg and doing it for even more attention šš¤¦š¼āāļø)
Advantage is only licensed against fleas and lice. The active ingredient within has no known effects on ticks or mites. It may have been that the tick on your dog naturally fell over, they will detach from your dog when they've had a full meal.
I recommend using a spot on like Frontline Plus or a collar like Seresto if wanting to cover ticks as well as fleas. Unfortunately there are no over the counter products that protect against mites. You can purchase prescription products from us that will do this but you need a written prescription from your vet first.
If your dog has ear issues then I recommend reading our blog on this, link provided below:

Do I have to get worming tabs with advantage flee pippets.
Advantage will prevent/treat fleas and lice. It will not worm your dog, I would advise using a product such as TermaWorm alongside Advantage every 3 months.

Will Advantage control ticks
Hello,
Thank you for your question.
Advantage is only effective against fleas, not ticks.

Do this cover the treatment for scabies biting lice and itās prevention?
Hello,
Thank you for getting in touch.
This product does cover for fleas and biting lice. It does not cover for scabies and you would need to talk to your vet regarding this.
